Carlos Zambrano is Clinically Insane

We all know that the Chicago Cubs have had problems with Carlos Zambrano for a couple of years. Recently “Big Z” verbally attacked his team-mates saying they are “embarrassing”. Yeah, sure. The Cubs suck. They seem to always be stuck in last place in the National League Central division. Its been what, 102 years since they won a world series? So here’s the story; Zambrano gives up five home runs to the Atlanta Braves and then he starts throwing at Chipper Jones. Then he gets ejected! And then he clears out his locker, threatens to retire from baseball and then storms out of Turner Field. He doesn’t say where he’s going or if he’ll be back. He doesn’t even say anything to Mike Quade. He just walks out on his team.  Zambrano has one more year on his $91 million dollar, five-year contract with an option for 2013. Could you imagine making that kind of money and then just “quitting” your job when you get frustrated with your own performance? Big “Z” is only 29 years old and already retiring!

My thoughts? I think it’s childish behavior. A lot of people would argue that it’s “just a game”. Sure. It’s just a game. But to these guys it’s their job. Just like when you or I get up in the morning and go to our jobs. Am I defending Zambrano’s actions? In no way would I condone this sort of behavior. Especially verbally slamming teammates. It takes nine guys on the field to win the game. But I can sympathize with him. I’ve been frustrated with my co-workers before. I’m sure we all have. It all depends on how we handle the situation though. Storming off pissed-mad is no way to handle it.

What’s going to happen to Carlos Zambrano? Right now he’s been placed on the disqualified list. Which means he can not play and will sit at home without pay. But what does that exactly mean for a guy that’s been making $18 million dollars a year for the last four years? Probably nothing. He’ll probably spend the next 30 days in Cancun or possibly the Bahamas.
